Harry Marshall of Mount Hope has a garden the likes of which is thankfully less rare. It is a mix of the wild and the domestic; food and flowers. He saves and trades seeds. He has been caught in the act of planting trees to better the environment. The Editor saw him once on the side of the Niagara Escarpment picking up other people's garbage. There is also a story of a mountain climbing expedition: a group of men climbed up, and then back down the mountain. Then Harry climbed back up on his own to retrieve his favourite pocket knife which had been mislaid during a meal break. Harry is a senior citizen. His hearing is not what it once was. At election time he canvases on behalf of the party that tries to pull people together rather than push them apart. He is of the opinion that governments should collect taxes from each of us in order to do significant things for all of us. A tax break is like getting an allowance and being told to buy some candy. Governments need to quit offering candy and get on with it. Build windfarms. Build a public transit industry. Build a childcare system. Build bridges, not barricades.
